Genealogy

The Seattle Public Library is home to one of the largest genealogy collections in the Pacific Northwest. At the Central Library, you'll find over 45,000 items dating back to colonial times. They trace the history of North American families and include military records, immigration lists, and census records. The genealogy librarians will gladly assist you in your search. They also offer tours of the Central Library's genealogy collection and provide classes to help you use online resources to utilize your research.

Language Learning

Learn a new language with the library's free classes. Instructors offer lessons in English, Spanish, as well as Chinese. You can also enjoy free online sessions with Mango Languages. It features more than 70 different languages, and you'll learn to speak like a local through real-life conversations. All you need to get started is your library card.

Seattle Writes

Seattle Writes supports budding writers by offering a list of writing resources and holding occasional classes. In addition, it also provides the Seattle Writes podcast. Follow the hosts and their guests as they discuss their craft and give helpful tips so you can finish your manuscript. Listen to episodes like Fear and Writing. Novelist Peg Cheng shares how fear is a common part of the writing process and how you can use it to "propel your writing rather than hinder it."
