An easy drive from our Redmond, WA apartments is a destination that inspires the conservation of our marine environment.
We're talking about the Seattle Aquarium, and it's the region's premier resource for hands-on marine experiences.
It's the ninth largest aquarium in the United States, and since 1977, over 27 million people have walked through the doors.
There is much to see and do, and exhibits include:
Step into the Underwater Dome where you'll be surrounded by Puget Sound's most fascinating fish. The 400,000-gallon aquarium is home to an array of species including rockfish. These colorful fish can live to be over 100 years old. While they vary in color and pattern, they all have large eyes and large dorsal fins with well-developed spines.
Birds and Shores centers on the habitats found along the rough and rocky shorelines of Puget Sound. It's home to several bird species and gives visitors a chance to see how they live and thrive together. The tufted puffins are a guest favorite. Their distinct coloring during summer breeding has earned them the nickname the "Parrots of the Sea." They appear to fly through the water and can stay below the surface for up to two minutes.
Meet charming otters and seals. This exhibit offers up-close viewing and teaches how to tell the animals apart. The harbor seals' pool has seating for 100 visitors, and it's where Barney, Q, and Hogan show off their skills. Harbor seals can dive up to 1,500 feet below the surface, and they can stay underwater for nearly thirty minutes to search for food.
